Astronomy 1 (Lecture Class and Telecourse) Information
Textbook Information and Reading Assignments

The official text for my class is the 3rd edition of Fraknoi, Morrison and Wolff's "Voyages Through The Universe". The reading assignments (shown below) are based on its chapter organization, so using any other text is likely to be confusing and unsatisfactory.
The current Media Update version of the text is available in the LBCC Bookstore, but it costs nearly $140 new, and not much less used. Although this is considered "reasonable" for textbooks nowadays, you can save a considerable amount of money if you buy the current textbook online (or even more if you purchase one of the older versions discussed below), and use other materials (e.g., library copies of other astronomy books) to keep up with the class until your copy arrives. One thing to consider in buying the text is that the CD-ROM which comes with it has absolutely nothing to do with the contents of the book or this class, so copies without the CD-ROM are just as satisfactory as copies with it.
Warning: No matter where you get the text, be sure you get the correct one. Similar-sounding texts by the same authors -- "Voyages Through The Solar System", "Voyages To The Stars And Galaxies", and "Voyages Through The Universe, Part 1" (or Part 2) -- only cover half the material that "Voyages Through The Universe" covers, and are NOT suitable substitutes. Because of this problem, if you get a text anywhere other than the ASB Bookstore or through the links provided on this page, please send me its ISBN, so I can verify whether it will 'do'.
Students who are in financial difficulty or on Financial Aid might also consider getting the (2000) Second Edition of the text, as it can be purchased for just a few dollars. Although the Second Edition is older, its chapter organization is the same as the Third Edition, and any deficiencies in its content are adequately covered by my Online Astronomy eText.
Aside from the links provided on this page, my publisher has added an LBCC Astronomy Texts page to its eStore, for the convenience of my students (texts are actually provided by Amazon.com or Amazon Marketplace, as Erindale Publishing only sells fiction).

Cover of the (2003) 3rd edition of the text (usually $35 to $100 plus tax and shipping).
Though a couple of years older, it is almost identical to the Media Update edition sold in the Bookstore.
