Although PGC 3035 is often referred to as IC 56A, there is no connection between it and IC 56. They were not discovered together, are not particularly close to each other (in the sky), and based on its recessional velocity of 12560 km/sec, PGC 3035 is twice as far away (about 560 million light years distant). Their one similarity is that they are about the same physical size. Since the twice as distant PGC 3035 appears to be only half the size (0.4 by 0.3 arcmin) as IC 56, it is also about 65 thousand light years across. The image below shows a 1 arcmin wide closeup of the galaxy. |
